Killed on the first day of the Somme battle, on the Fricourt-Contalmaison road while leading the advance of the 64th Brigade. Had been wounded at Festubert in December 1914. Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. Buried at Gordon Dump Cemetery, Ovillers.

Lived in Cheltenham, where he was a tax surveyor. A territorial soldier before the war, he was commissioned June 1916. He was killed during an attack on German trenches and is buried at Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval.

Lived in Cheltenham. Reported missing after his battalion attacked High Wood in the Pozieres area of the Somme battle. Listed on the Thiepval Memorial.

2nd Lieutenant EDWIN ORMONDE BROWNING - Killed in action 20th April 1916 - 7th Bn
Born 26th May 1892, in Cheltenham. A trainee teacher, he enlisted 1914 and was commissioned . Served at Gallipoli, Egypt and Mesopotamia. He was killed in the last attempt to relieve the garrison trapped at Kut-al-Amara. He is listed on the Basra Memorial.

Son of the late Rev. George and Catharine Butt, of Demerara, British Guiana. Buried at Pont-du-Hem Military Cemetery.

Born 30th November 1890, in India. Son of William Crooke, C.I.E. (Indian Civil Service) and Alice. Educated Cheltenham College and then Oxford (BA in history). Commissioned September 1914. He was killed by a shell at La Boiselle, aged 25 years. (His brother, Hugh, was killed December 1916). Listed on the Thiepval Memorial.   8th Battalion

Aged 31. Son of William and Mary Lewis, of Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol. Buried at Merville Communal Cemetery, Nord.

2nd Lieutenant ROBERT MADDER - Killed in action 20th July 1916 - 3/5th Battalion
 Seconded to the 145th Bde. Machine Gun Corps in June 1916. Aged 28. Born December 1887, son of Allan and Emily, of Carshalton, Surrey and Gloucester. Educated at Whitgift Grammar School, he joined the Peninsular and Oriental Steamship Company in 1907. He was first flautist with the London Shipping Orchestral Society, and member of the Choir of All Saints Church, Carlshalton. Enlisted in the London Rifle Brigade on outbreak of war and commissioned June 1915 in the Gloucesters. Seconded to the Machine Gun Corps early 1916. On 20th July 1916 he was leaving a dugout when he was killed by a shell. Buried at Bapaume Post Military Cemetery, Albert.
