EGYPT 1801
General Sir
Ralph Abercromby - wounded at Alexandria 13 March 1801. died
of wounds on board HMS Foudroyant 28 March 1801.
A musket-ball entered his groin, and lodged deep in the
hip-joint. Despite acute pain he continued to give orders and
ignored the wound. After victory had been secured he lay down on
the sand in a state of exhaustion. Soldiers were seen crowding
around prayering for his recovery. His wound was examined but
nothing could be done. He was carried onboard the Foudroyant,
where he died on the morning 28th of March. "As his life was honourable, so his death
was glorious. His memory will be recorded in the annals of his
